Look out, Steph Curry! An AI-powered robot is after your 3-pointer record! Amateur Robotics Enthusiast Brian Lederer features CUE: Toyota’s basketball playing robot.
What is CUE by Toyota?
CUE is a robotics project developed by the Toyota Engineering Society. Powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI), CUE is programmed with one use in mind: to become a basketball superstar! Designed in the image of basketball legends of today, like Lebron James and Kevin Durant. CUE is 7 ft tall and weighs 240 lbs. The robot relies on sensors to calculate the proper angle and power necessary to make a shot — from any distance!
At the Olympic Games in Tokyo (Summer), Toyota engineers introduced CUE to an audience. Although Brian Lederer wasn’t able to attend the Olympics, he was blown away to learn about this unveiling! As an amateur robotics enthusiast, Lederer enjoys keeping up with the latest in the industry, from practical use devices to humanoid projects. When he discovered CUE, the hobbyist was amazed, to say the least! At that time, the AI-powered bot was able to make a shot from half-court — with precision. A year and a half later, the autonomous athlete has already upped its game. It has not only perfected 3-pointers, but smashed the world-record for consecutive shots landed. And by “smashed,” Lederer would describe that consecutive shots record as a complete demolition of any record ever set by a human — in the past, present or future. To talk numbers, let’s just say CUE landed well over 2,000 baskets like it was a breeze!
